President & CEO
Rajiv Pande is the President and CEO. Prior to joining Smpl Bio, Pande was Vice President Business Development at Bio-techne (TECH), a global life sciences company. Bio-techne in 2014 had acquired CyVek, a biotechnology company where Pande was a co-Founder & Vice President Business Development. Pande was responsible for creating, developing and executing CyVek’s commercialization strategy.
Pande has 20+ years of experience with developing and commercializing products and technologies, and has held numerous leadership, management and research positions, including those at IDEXX Laboratories, Fisher Life Sciences, Pierce Biotechnology and Medical Analysis Systems.
Pande holds a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from Yale University.
Vice President, Software and Bioinformatcs
Boris Umylny is Vice President, Software and Bioinformatics. Prior to joining Smpl Bio, Umylny was Director Bioinformatics at the National Center for Genome Resources (Santa Fe, NM). Umylny had previously co-founded Fusion Systems (Tokyo, Japan) and had successfully led the company to an M&A event.
Umylny has successfully developed and deployed large mission-critical systems including cloud-based genomic big data solutions. Umylny has held numerous leadership positions, including those at Fusion Systems, GeneWiz, and Lumenogix.
Umylny holds a Ph.D. (Cell and Molecular Biology) from the University of Hawaii, and BS (Computer Science) from Columbia University.
Dr. Nelson, a thought leader in stem cell research and single cell biology is an Associate Professor of Genetics and Genomics in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut where his lab is at the forefront of active computational and wet-lab research.
Dr. Nelson holds a BA from Cornell University, a Ph.D. from Harvard University, and held Post-Doctoral fellowships at M.I.T., and at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Dr. Nelson has published over fifty peer-reviewed articles including papers in Nature and Science.
Dr. Mandoiu is the United Technologies Corporation Associate Professor in Engineering Innovation, in the Computer Science and Engineering Department, at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Mandoiu’s research (bioinformatics and computational genomics) is funded by grants from public (NSF, NIH, USDA) and private corporations.
Dr. Mandoiu holds an M.S. from Bucharest University, Romania, and a Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology; he was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California Los Angeles, and at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Mandoiu has almost 100 publications and is a recipient of the prestigious NSF Faculty Early Career Development award.
Co-Founder, Senior Scientific Programmer
Ed Hemphill has extensive experience in the software industry, including in the areas of software development configuration, testing and deployment. Hemphill holds a BS in computer science, from Eastern Connecticut State University.
Kevin Bouley is President and CEO of Nerac, Inc., a global technology and IP advisory research firm. A recognized leader in the information industry, Bouley is an active Angel, investing capital and resources in numerous start-ups. Bouley holds a degree in Finance, from the University of Connecticut.
Paul Brody is the CEO and President of Mountain Dairy, one of the nation’s largest fluid milk operators located in Storrs, CT. Brody is also the founder of Brody Excelsior Advisors LLC, a management consulting firm offering guidance in strategic business development. Previously Brody was co-founder and President of Excelsior Gaming LLC. From 2003 to 2012, Brody also served as Vice President of Corporate Development for the Mohegan Sun, one of the world’s largest casino, resort and entertainment facilities.
Brody holds a JD from University of Connecticut, and a BA (Economics). He is a member of the Bar of the State of Connecticut, the United States District Court, CT and the Connecticut Bar Association Indian Law Section.
Tom Costello is a seasoned senior executive with extensive experience in the high-technology software industry. Costello is currently an active Angel investor and advisor to start ups businesses in the high tech sector. Costello has proven executive leadership in managing large globally distributed product development teams, deployment of global technology initiatives, and integration of complex M&A corporate-wide programs. His extensive background at diverse technology companies provides versatility as well as exposure to best practices in providing investments and executive leadership.
